In 2005 Australian Andrew Souto first visited Vietnam.
As a fully qualified motor mechanic Andrew witnessed the usual
patch-up and go type of repairs instead of the actual repairing
so it lasts. To be fair the country was developing at a huge
rate of knots and automotive repair industry was struggling to
hard to keep up with the sheer numbers of new bikes and new
riders on the road put a huge new demand on the current services.
More importantly Andrew witnessed the responsibility of children
who had come to the Hanoi City to make money so they could send
money home to help their parents in rural areas. The children
often became street kids so life became increasingly difficult
with no path to support their families.
In 2008 with securing support from the VIDA (Volunteer
International Development Australian Program) and Blue Dragon
Children’s Foundation in which he had been
Andrew started a on the job training program for these
disadvantaged youth to become motor bike mechanics; with up to
12 trainees in the program at one time. More structured training
is required with the view that VIP bikes can offer accredited
training from recognized vocational colleges.
Comprehensive PROGRAM Offered
VIP bikes workshop, live in Hanoi, need your bike fixed, or

Because many children coming onto this program have experienced
a much hardship, poverty including very poor living conditions;
VIP has developed a residential facility that includes all their
accommodation, meals, a house mother to provide a supportive and
caring home environment. Other training includes life-skills that help them develop general domestic, educational and
with Social Workers that helps the trainees rebuild themselves
to leave as well adjusted adults that can lead a fulfilling

What they are in need of is certified senior mechanics who can
provide training and supervision for extended groups of trainees.
There is often a time frame set for how long you need to stayon
these types of volunteer roles, but if you are newly retired and
want to pass your knowledge on, this could be the ideal place to

If you are unfamiliar with Hanoi, please check the map carefully
to find. Running parallel to Pho Yen Phu (Road which is a dike road)
is Durong Hong Ha (Street), get on that Road near Long Bien Bridge
and head away from the Long Bien Bridge toward the Sofitel Plaza
on the riverside of the dike road. Look for Tan Ap Street to your right,
and turn left on alley number 71, which is at house number 71;
there and it is on the right.
